Our Story

From a beloved corner on the Historic Covington Square to a growing community of artists—this is the story that continues to shape Southern Heartland.

Who We Are...

Our Mission at Southern Heartland Arts is to provide, encourage, and support involvement in the visual arts, toward the goal of enriching the cultural life of area residents through instruction, educational scholarship and exhibition of fine art.

Where It Began...

For years, Southern Heartland Art united the community through a statewide fine arts festival, attracting artists and visitors from across the Southeast and beyond.

But there was always a bigger dream: A permanent place for artists to gather, create, and share their work.

A Home on the Square...

In 2004, that dream became reality.

Thirteen local artists came together to open a gallery on the corner of Monticello & Washington Streets—a place many still remember.

For nearly two decades, the gallery became:

A home for local and professional artists
A space for classes, workshops, and exhibitions
A hub for youth programs, scholarships, and summer camps
A gathering place for the creative community

From 25 members to over 200, the guild grew alongside the space it called home.

Impact in the Community...

Through the years, Southern Heartland Arts has:

Hosted workshops with nationally recognized artists
Provided classes for children and adults
Awarded scholarships to graduating students pursuing the arts
Partnered with local organizations to expand access to creativity
Offered free and low-cost opportunities for the community

This has always been about more than art.

It’s about access. It’s about connection. It’s about belonging.

Education & Instruction

Southern Heartland Arts has long believed that art should be accessible to everyone. Through weekly classes, workshops, summer art camps, Paint Party events, and guest artist demonstrations, the organization has encouraged creativity in children, teens, adults, and seniors alike. While some programs are currently on hold as the gallery searches for its next permanent home, education remains a core part of its mission.

Scholarships

Southern Heartland Arts invests in the next generation of artists through scholarships funded in part by Guild membership dues. These scholarships have supported children's summer art camps, weekly youth art classes, and graduating seniors continuing their visual arts education in college.

Community Partnerships

Southern Heartland Arts has partnered with organizations throughout Newton County to bring art into the community and support local initiatives, including Piedmont Newton Hospital, the Arts Association in Newton County, the Kiwanis Club of Covington, the Covington Lions Club, the Heartland Woman's Club, Piedmont Medical Auxiliary, and the Miracle League.

Because No Gallery Stands Alone...

For decades, local businesses, organizations, and community partners have helped Southern Heartland Arts bring creativity, education, scholarships, and opportunities to Newton County. Their support has shaped our story—and continues to help write its next chapter.
