Investing in Young Artists
The James P. Hayes Cardinal Scholarship is offered by Southern Heartland Arts, Inc., a nonprofit dedicated to supporting and advancing the visual arts in our community.
Since 1988, Southern Heartland Arts has invested in young artists through scholarships, instruction, and exhibition opportunities. The Cardinal Scholarship Fund was established in memory of James P. Hayes and continues to be supported through generous community contributions.
This scholarship exists to help graduating seniors take the next step—turning artistic passion into a meaningful future.

Before You Begin
To complete your application, please have the following items ready before you start.
✔ A letter of recommendation
(from a teacher, counselor, or instructor — preferably in the arts)
✔ A copy of your college acceptance letter
✔ A short essay describing:
✔ How art has influenced your life
✔ Your educational goals
✔ Your future aspirations
✔ 4 images of your original work
✔ Include the title and medium for each piece
Selected applicants may be asked to provide original artwork for in-person review or display.
You’ll be able to upload all documents and images directly through the application form.
